I got a new toy a few days ago, and I've been a bit busy setting it up (or rather, trying to set it up) so I've not had time to post. Fortunately Phriedom has been filling in nicely. We should be joined shortly by a third regular contributor, to lend another perspective to things around here.
Meanwhile, setting up a home network, while still protecting all PCs from outside threats, is a major pain in the ass. I'm just sayin'...
I got the laptop to print to the shared desktop printer, which was quite an accomplishment. And from the laptop, I can see the shared folders on the desktop, but I can't actually access them (it tells me that I'm not authorized to view them).
Aaaargh.
And I still haven't gotten the laptop set up quite the way I want it. The thought was, if I have a portable PC that I can keep with me while traveling, I could use it for my primary apps (e-mail, banking, and browsing) and maybe development work as well. Then I could free up the desktop as a gaming machine.
Of course, the desktop is old enough (about 3 years or so) that the brand new laptop is actually a substantially better gaming machine, too (I paid a little extra for the nifty ATI X1400 video card). So now I've got an itch to update the desktop... it's a vicious cycle!
Hopefully I'll get a chance to post soon about a few topics that I've been mulling over recently, but until then watch for more activity from the others here.
